Social Networking

Social networks are a huge part of the internet these days and there are many different things they can be used for. Asides from the obvious fact that social networks can be used to communicate with people and keep you updated, it can be used for business as well. Since there are millions of users on social networking sites, businesses use it as a form of advertising. Movies, music, products, you name it, it is being advertised on social networking sites. There is good reason for that, with so many unique users, social networks have become a giant in the advertising field.

Asides from business, social networks can be used and have impacts on many other things. People can organize groups that can plan rallies and protests because they can communicate to a mass amount of people. President Obama himself turned to social networks when he was campaigning. He recognized the power of the internet and communication through social networks and was able to use it effectively to gather his supporters.[1]

Of course to every advantage there must be a disadvantage and social networks have many dark sides. Because there are no certain ways of knowing who is behind a picture, predators lurk around social networks. The most terrifying thing about the internet is that your identity is never safe. With social networks identity theft is inevitable. Information given on social networking sites can easily be extracted and combined with other sources to steal someone's identity.[2] People must be very careful of the personal information they submit on the internet.

Technologies are advancing fast and almost every portable device has social networks embedded on them. I personally believe that social networks will continue to grow. It seems to me that the more sophisticated technologies become, the more socially connected people are able to be. I believe that as technology continues to evolve, having a digital identity will be a requirement one day. So in the future, everyone will be a part of one large social network.

Check out Social Networking Sites

I've recently visited four different social networking sites which are Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, and Friendster. Now I'm going to compare my impression of each of them.

Facebook has the look and feel of a very organized site. It has the feel of a more professional environment than the other social networks. The other social networks allow users to create user-names which can be confusing and misleading at times. Facebook displays everyone by their real names so finding people is a lot more easier and effective. Facebook also does the best job of the social networking sites at keeping everyone connected.

Twitter is the most different social networking site from the others. At first it feels simplistic and there seems to be no activities happening. There are no photo albums or any other sort of things to look at for users. There simply is a short written bio and a small user picture. Twitter revolves around words from people to people and pretty much nothing else. However, it is possible to share pictures, videos, links and etc. Twitter is basically like text messages except you are sharing your thoughts with the entire world. It can become very addictive and fun because sometimes celebrities reply to everyday people.

Myspace is the social network that feels more unprofessional than the others. It has the look and feel of a social network dedicated to teens and music. Myspace has tons of activities but the interface is not the simplest and since users can edit their own pages, it can become impossible to navigate around sometimes. Also, user-names can make it difficult to find others.

Friendster is a social gaming site. It is the most fun of all the other sites because it is dedicated to keep people connected by playing games with each other. It is not the best at communicating with others. Friendster is mostly for those who are into online gaming or for anyone looking for ways to pass time.

Blogs vs. Wikis

Blogs and Wikis share many similarities because they are both users controlled websites. But of course they have many differences as well.

A blog for example is solely based on opinions. It is a way for people to share their thoughts. Like all opinions, they can also be based on facts but for the most part, people tend to share their point of view on certain facts. However, just because they are opinionated does not mean that they are not helpful. Blogs can be much more of a collaborative effort than Wikis. People who share similar ideas can get together and organize powerful groups and such. In some cases people can even come together to put a stop to crimes in their neighborhood.[1] This is a way of keeping under the radar without putting themselves in danger which is certainly effective and helpful.

Wikis are effective in different ways because for the most part, they are based on facts. Most wiki sites such as Wikipedia, the user submitted contributions are followed by verifiable sources. In the case of wikis, facts are verified by others and if something does not seem authentic, someone of expertise in that field can edit it, either change it completely, or revise it.[2]

Both Blogs and Wikis serve importance in today's digital world. The most fascinating thing about them both is that they show the significance and capabilities of user contributions.

Describe New Media

What sort of technologies exactly are considered new media? Well, to start, cell phones are considered new media because the newer models simply do not work without the internet. Not all portable electronics require the internet to work, however, you can be sure that if it is portable, is has access to the internet. So basically, all the newer portable electronics are examples of new media.

Laptops also play a very big role in new media. What can a television do that a laptop can't? In fact, more people prefer to watch their favorite shows on their laptops rather than the television. Television does not give you the amount of customization and freedom that a laptop that is connected to the internet does.[1] Because of just this one feature, the internet, the laptop has tons of advantage over the television.

So, undoubtedly, the main difference between new media and old media is indeed the internet. In fact, now new models of televisions have the ability to connect to the internet because if they don't, the once most popular living room item will soon be dated.

Surely however, the internet alone cannot be the determining factor as to what is new and old media. There are also many secondary factors. Digital is another factor that is considered in new media. Almost everything that is considered part of the media has gone digital. An example would be an e-mail as apposed to writing and mailing a letter that would take time to be delivered. Books and newspapers have gone digital as well. More people are using e-books to do their reading versus having a huge book or newspaper that takes up unnecessary space.

Not having the option of the internet is considered old media but also anything that is physically big, takes up unnecessary space, and is not digital is definitely considered old media.

What is New Media?

Without a doubt, in this day of age technology is constantly changing at a rapid pace. Well, with all this new technology, a new type of media is born. So what is this new media? It is of course the internet. But, it is not just the internet itself. It is all the new technological devices that revolve around the internet.
Cell phones are at the top of this list. Sure cell phones have been out for a while now and so has the internet. However, in today's world it is near impossible to find a cell phone or any other portable device that is not built to work with the internet. This is because the internet has been so powerful that it has become a must for basically all electronic devices.

With all this portability of course comes a new type of media. People are now communicating in different ways and using things such as video webcams from their portable devices to communicate to the masses through websites such as Youtube [1]. With all this new technology powered by the internet, people are starting to explore new ways to use video in different ways other than ways it is used professionally.

This is why this type of new media is replacing the old media. It is difficult to watch a news channel on television today and not find them communicating with others via webcam. Some reporters even broadcast live using webcams. Also, more and more news channels use videos from the internet submitted by regular everyday people to broadcast the news.

The internet and portable devices are now creating a new type of media that is without a doubt quickly out-performing the traditional type of media.

Introduction

Hello all, my name is Michael Persaud and I will give a brief introduction about myself. I'm a student at Brooklyn College and this is my very last semester there. I'm a Film major and my focus is on production, I'm aspiring to be a director. I've already made a few short films and I recently finished shooting my thesis film which I'm still working on in post-production. Hopefully, I'll be done before the summer begins. After that, I plan on submitting my film to festivals across the country like basically all serious filmmakers do.

As for what I am doing now, I work as a freelance photographer and videographer. I also do voluntary work on other films as well, both students and professionals.
